28/4/18. Whitewater Draw. Just after sunrise by the pond: orioles, thrashers.

Just after dawn I set up by the pond; facing east to the sunrise, over the pond.   I was on a berm that surrounds the pond and allows people to walk around and see and enjoy the birds both in the pond, and also outwards/westwards where the winter visitors, the cranes, come in vast ...

28/04/18. Bees in the acacia, crickets, orioles and more; dawn at Whitewater Draw, Arizona.

Sitting next to an acacia in full bloom; facing west towards a dried section of the Draw, close to the owl roost.   The air is full of the sound of bees, hard at work on the acacia with its full and heavy yellow flowers.   Through the acacia and other trees the crickets add ...

28/04/18. Cowbirds in Whitewater Draw, Arizona

I went to Whitewater Draw north of Bisbee today (28/4/18).  It’s a large reserve in the desert grasslands of southeast Arizona that serves as the nesting ground for thousands of cranes in winter time.   In springtime most of the water in the draw seems to recede, leaving behind just a large reed filled-pond neighbouring ...

I watched a beautiful green heron land into the reeds; a few alligators catching the last rays ...

19/04/18. Anahuac.

This recording was made at dawn at the first layby on the narrow road that goes around Shoveler Pond. Great-tailed grackle males were parading about on the road in small groups; showing off to the females, I expect.   Also searching for mates, the male alligators were making their own low, booming, groaning sounds.   ...

20/04/18. Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge

Dawn chorus at the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, Texas.

15/04/18. Dawn chorus on Steiner Ranch Trail.

Visiting Austin and spent the other morning walking on one of the trails at Steiner Ranch.  The residents of Steiner Ranch are very fortunate to have a rich network of trails to enjoy. It was a lovely cold spring morning. The birdsong was beautiful and varied as I walked the trail. The central Texas landscape ...
