I sat on a bench in the quiet narrow winding streets of Aulus well before dawn and waited for the Black Redstarts. In the background the River Garbet can be heard as it continues to empty the spring thaw down the valley.
Black redstarts are quite rare in the UK; I had never heard one before. They like to nest high in the eaves of houses in towns, and Aulus must be a perfect place for them.
These little birds are quite distinctive with their chattery staccato calls and trills. They are also very pretty, but I didn’t see one between 5:30 and 6!
