10/05/19. Black redstarts in Aulus-les-Bains before dawn.

I sat on a bench in the quiet narrow winding streets of Aulus well before dawn and waited for the Black Redstarts.  70158230_1072432746291959_6048398990355988480_nIn the background the River Garbet can be heard as it continues to empty the spring thaw down the valley.

Black redstarts are quite rare in the UK; I had never heard one before.  They like to nest high in the eaves of houses in towns, and Aulus must be a perfect place for them.

These little birds are quite distinctive with their chattery staccato calls and trills.  They are also very pretty, but I didn’t see one between 5:30 and 6!
